In 2005, she received the Best Newcomer Award for The Russian Dolls at the Cannes Film Festival. Her birthplace was from San Francisco, California she lived south of San Francisco in Menlo Park. Walter Smith worked as a computer researcher, and Lora Smith was her mom. They divorced at the age of seven. Courtney was 7 years old and she lived with both parents at various age levels. Jennifer is her sibling and is an advertising executive. She attended Menlo-Atherton High School located in Atherton California and completed her studies at Tamalpais High School in Mill Valley California in 1985. She has also appeared with Ensemble Theater Company Mill Valley in her time as a high school student.
